The Simple Acts
"Do small things, with great love." -St. Therese of Lisieux
Working in retreat ministry really opens up a whole new perspective on the world. There are many times when teens will open up about different situations they are in, and very commonly I hear the struggle of "I feel like I can't do anything to help."
It's probably safe to say that many of us have been caught in that situation where we feel helpless. We sense that the intensity of the struggle of the person we want to help is too much for us to handle, or we are just stuck with how to help.
I am always brought back to this very simple quote from St. Therese about doing small things, but with great love.
Love is what has the power to transform even the smallest actions. Many times I find myself stuck with not knowing what to say or what to do and the Holy Spirit always reminds me to just be.
The simple act of us being present with someone, having a listening heart, has more power than knowing the right words. It reminds them that they are not alone, that someone is walking with them.
That...is an act of great love.
Today, I challenge you ladies to come back to the present moment. Focus on being in the moment with whoever you encounter today.
If you hang out with your friends, make it an effort to put your phone away. If you are in a meeting, make it an effort to keep your thoughts from focusing on other things. If you struggle with how to help someone who opens up about a difficult situation, just remind them you are there with them rather than stress about finding the right words.
Be present today, in the small things.
Walking Together, Sandra
