The Purpose of Generosity
My dearest ladies!
This week we have taken a look at the vice of greed and it’s opponent: the virtue of charity. As Sandra mentioned, charity is connected with generosity, also known as liberality, and that is what we’ll be looking deeper into.
On Thursday Sandra challenged us to choose one person and give to them in whatever way we can. Did we do it? If we did, amazing! Praise God! Let's continue! If we didn't, was it because we felt unable?
We might sometimes feel as if we have nothing to be generous with, but God promises us so much: “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. (2 Corinthians 9:10-11).
God will provide us a means to give, even when we feel empty. He promises to leave our love tank overflowing, so that we are able to give to others. And because it is God’s love that leads us to serve, our generosity leads others to Him. In other words, the heart that is generous is an arrow pointing to God, for all to see.
“This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:12-15)
The purpose of generosity is the same as the purpose of our lives: the glory of God. It always leads back to Him! God gives us talents which He wants us to share with others, so that people can meet Him through us. We are vessels! How honorable! How beautiful! How big is our purpose here on earth! We have the opportunity to be the people through which the Mighty God reaches out to His children.
We don’t have to start a charity or donate a huge sum to a good cause. Today, let’s do what we can: let's BE READY for opportunities, let’s give where we are needed and where we are able. As our relationship with Him grows, we will feel a greater “nudge” to give. As we learn to receive more from Him, we will also be able to give more. He will guide our hearts.
Lord we pray that You open our hearts to Your word. May Your word transform us in such a way that we are able to be genuinely generous. Show us how we can use our gifts and talents to glorify you, and help us make the choice to live in generosity. Help us glorify Your name with how we live our lives on the day-to-day.
Your daughters, <3
Ps - I experienced something so beautiful in writing this and must share it with you ladies! The day that I was supposed to write this post was a day that I had a strong headache. I decided I wouldn’t use my laptop and would instead refer to the bible yet I felt like the bible verses that I had looked into weren’t speaking to me. I thought I would have to google out some information on generosity but something pushed me to keep searching in the bible. And there, I found a bible verse that summarized generosity so simply and so beautifully (2 Cor 9:10-15). It was such a strong message to me: all of my questions can be answered by referring to the bible, I just have to seek.
