Go to Jesus to get "healed"
This is an all-encompassing book, written by the founder and president of The JPII Healing Center, Dr. Bob Schuchts. It focuses on healing - body, heart, and mind - through a relationship with Christ. What makes this read different than others like it, is that it touches on all aspects of a human being, and includes personal experience. For instance, Dr. Bob Shuchts explains that many of our physical ailments are related to the state of our inner being. This kind of holistic approach to our humanness really spoke to me.
To get more details on Dr. Bob Schuchts' approach to healing, we can check an online recorded webinar that he presented for those working in ministry (1). One component that really stood out for me was Dr. Schuchts' explanation of Christian/Catholic formation as consisting of the following three components: In-formation, Trans-formation, and Re-formation, with each level being a unique and deeper encounter with Christ. These levels include having Him is as the source of our identity - not shame, not guilt, not fear, not anything else. Hearing this helped me see what I've been doing thus far, and why I have felt stuck: I go to Jesus to get "healed" ASAP but He invites me to develop a deep, genuine and long-term relationship with Him through which healing occurs.
Another piece that was really important for me was the emphasis on looking at other people from the perspective of wholeness rather than from the perspective of brokenness - the wholeness coming from our identity as a child of God (1). Dr. Bob Schuchts quotes St. Paul John II by saying “We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the sum of the Father's love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son Jesus” and adds that we are neither the sum of our failures nor the sum of our success, simply the some of our Father's love.
I highly recommend checking out Dr. Bob Schuchts's book (there's also an audio version!), whether or not you're convinced of a need for personal healing (2).
