Care for our Church
I’m sure we have all heard the bible verse: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies.” -1 Corinthians 6: 19-20
Whenever I heard this, I would think only of my physical appearance, how I look, and how I take care of my physical body. But after truly reflecting on this quote, I realized how deep this quote truly is.
If we look at the singular use of the word “your”, we know it applies to us individually. We know that God is asking for us to take care of our bodies. That’s by physically taking care of it, exercising, eating healthy foods etc. But it’s also the mental component that God is telling us to look after. Making sure we are taking care of our mental health as well. And with that, our spiritual health. Making sure your soul is clean and healthy, so that the Lord may truly be able to dwell within us. We have to take care of ourselves, to be Christ’s temple, to be a beautiful place to reside.
Now if we look at the plural version of the word “your”, we know that St. Paul was talking about the body of Christ. We know that we have an obligation to take care of the whole church and all of our brothers and sisters within it. We have to remember that we all make up the Body of Christ, and we all play a significant role within it. What are we doing to take care of our church?
I want us to reflect on this passage a little more today. Think about your own life. Are you taking care of your personal temple, where God longs to reside in? And are you putting in an effort to take care of the body of Christ?
