A Fetus is a Baby
My husband and I celebrated this past Mother's Day. I was 3 months pregnant at the time.
In doing this, I received a message from someone commenting how I shouldn't be celebrating so early because the baby was not yet here and "you never know what could happen in the next few months" and "what will you do next year then for the real thing?".
Now, I know this might sound rude to some, but given the relationship I have with this person, instead of getting defensive, I decided to take it as an opportunity to explain my reasoning behind it. They were saying these things because they genuinely did not understand.
When it comes to being pro-life, I think we need to be intentional about how we discuss pregnancy. When a woman becomes pregnant, she is not a 'mama-to-be' but a mother. She is not 'expecting a child' but has a child. Society has shaped the conversation around pregnancy in a way where there is little recognition for the life that has begun in the womb, and instead focuses solely on the birth day of the child.
"Well, it's not a child, it's a fetus. It's merely a clump of cells so it's not the same thing."
What many don't realize is that the medical term "fetus" is actually to signify the stage of development of the human. It would be classified in the same category of words as: baby, toddler, child, teenager, young adult, adult, etc. These words never change the dignity of the human but instead are a reflection of the person's age. In fact, a simple Google search of the definition of 'fetus' will tell you that it is: "an unborn offspring of a mammal, in particular an unborn human baby more than eight weeks after conception." Thank you, Google.
(As a side note, something that continually leaves me gobsmacked are the countless celebrities and public figures who advocate for the protection of animals and stand up for the protection of "sea turtle eggs", yet in the same breathe are able to promote abortion as a human right. Not sure how they are able to justify that in their minds.)
There is no point in which a human is not a human. From the moment of conception, there is a soul that has entered the physical realm of this earth, placed there by the Creator Himself. I will forever quote Jeremiah 1:5, one of my favourite passages in the Bible: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you." Have you ever really taken a moment to ponder that? The Lord intentionally, and with love, created you. He KNEW you before you were even placed here on earth. And in the same way, the Lord knows every single baby that starts his/her life in their mother's womb.
At my 9-week ultrasound I was amazed by the strong beating heart of my child, along with her tiny formed little body, complete with her own little hands, feet, belly and beautiful little head. It made me realize even more that no matter how early along a woman is in her pregnancy, there is a child within her womb.
If only wombs had windows, there would be no abortion. This is precisely why they don't show mothers their ultrasound before an abortion.
Sisters, let's be intentional about how we talk about pregnancy and change the wording around it. Let's be intentional in reminding others that in fact, it is a child that is already here. And if someone questions you about it, take it as an opportunity to share this truth with them.
In Christ, Kasia
